and now, picking up the pieces from sandy. staten island is a 60 square mile portion of new york city and it suffered some of the worst devastation from the storm. 19 of the city's deaths happened on staten island and today, i toured some of the hardest hit areas and spoke with residents just beginning to pick up the piecing of their shattered lives. this is quincy avenue and you still can't get close to house number 845. that's where barbara and her son, christopher, barely survived the storm. >> we stayed 11 hour onss on the roof. we kept yelling help to everyone we see. nobody was coming. nobody. >> their neighborhood, destroyed. the water rose feet in just minutes. they escaped with their lives, but suffered unimaginable loss. >> we were told the next day, looking for my sister, she was found dead in her apartment -- we have to get her from brooklyn and try to bury her. >> at the shelter, we saw about 250 people with no place to go and there are others still unaccounted for. congressman michael grim represents all of state

the death toll from sandy is now up to at least 48 people in eight states, and nearly 6 million people in 15 states and the nation's capital are still without power tonight. also today president obama got a firsthand look of the jersey shore, one of the areas hardest hit by sandy. he was accompanied by new jersey governor chris christie. here they are in a photo just released by the white house within the past hour on marine one. the president said he will help. >> we are here for you and we will not forget, we will follow up to make sure that you get all the help that you need until you've rebuilt. >> the iconic boardwalk and seaside heights, new jersey, is just one of the places the president saw today. it's a landmark made famous by bruce springsteen, mtv and "the sopranos." this is before and after, to give you a sense of what's happened. it's not even all there. you can see the rides including the roller coaster have been washed away sitting in the ocean. michael holmes is just across the bay in toms river, new jersey. you were in seaside heights, you toured it, what did you see?

the latest as we continue to track storm sandy. track storm sandy. let's go out front. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com >>> good evening, everyone. i'm erin burnett "outfront" tonight. i want to welcome our viewers from around the world who are watching this storm that we've been watching over 1,000 mile area here on the east coast of the united states. affecting about 20% of the united states population. flooding has been the big issue. where i'm standing right now, those of you who are watching the earlier, know the water was up above my knee. we set a record here in lower manhattan, in terms of a storm surge. the record is 13.88 feet, exceeding by almost three feet the record set back in 1960 with hurricane donna. that's just some of the records we've seen as the storm continues to strike across the 1,000-mile area as it continues to head north. in new york, the largest transit system is closed. the stock exchange has been closed. first time since september 11th, 2001. as i mentioned, 11 people confirmed dead across five states as the storm c

marathon with all the generate rs, food, water and police that requires as new yorkers still reel from sandy. on staten island today, there was this message for the mayor. after what we heard from person after person there. we were there again today and met this owner of a local garden inn. this hotel is overflowing with people sharing rooms. every one of his rooms, people there have nowhere else to go. richard refused to kick them out to make room for the marathon runners that were supposed to stay there. >> people are dying on staten island. they are dying. and i have a dilemma, do i pull people out who have no place to go to make room for marathon runners? i don't think so. i'm not doing it. i can't do it. >> while victims on staten island and many other new yorkers are relieved the mayor canceled the marathon, the news was hard for some. when our producer broke the news to this runner, tears filled her eyes. >> they're pulling out bodies of little children and us runners are going to walk through and run through their neighborhood in our fancy marathon outfits like nothing happened. let
